The Misunderstanding: When you come home to chewed shoes and your dog lowers their head, avoids eye contact, and slinks away, it feels like they know they did wrong.
The Reality: Dogs do not experience guilt the way humans do. What you are seeing is fear or appeasement. They are responding to your tone of voice, body language, or past experiences of you being upset. They associate your current reaction with the situation, not the action they took hours ago.
The Misunderstanding: Your dog yawns because they need a nap.
The Reality: While dogs do yawn when sleepy, yawning is also a well-documented stress or displacement signal. Dogs frequently yawn to calm themselves down in unfamiliar environments, during training, or when feeling overwhelmed by too much affection or handling.
